nortel 8600 gig modules

can anybody tell me why we have autonegotiate on gig modules ? given that gig only talks to gig .Is it possible to have half duplex ? I doubt.

The auto setting is for far end link detect and is not for switch to half duplex of the link.

autonegotiation is not for our end this is for other end with which my gig module is connecting.So it has to check for it.
 
I have, on occasion, had to turn off autonegotiate on Bay450 gig MDA's in order to get it to connect consistantly to Passport's. Turned it off on both ends and forced to 1000 full. I've also done this to keep Bay 450's from dropping off the network during high levels of network activity, especially during RIS operations and even though Qos is used....

RIS is Windows 2000 Remote Installation Service which allows a form of imaging and/or ghosting. In the early stages the PC connects to the server and simply does a file by file copy. It's this file copy process that causes steady but heavy bandwidth usage for 5 to 10 minutes.
