I keep getting requests to test and make sure our 39xx phones are a specific release. What is the difference in release versions and does it have anything to do with the firmware on the phones? I've checked the firmware on the phones using LD 32 fwvu XX XX, and found we are on 090 and 091.

From what I understand the release is hardware specific, and the different releases may have very small hardware changes made to them. For instance, release 3 might have a different type or manufacturer of display than release 2 even though they look exactly the same. Just looking for someone to please clarify.

I've found this recently. It's a little bit old, but gives you an idea.

The following versions of up-issued firmware for the M3900 series of digital phones are now Generally Available:
M3903 version 9.0
M3904 version 9.3
M3905 version 9.3
version 9.4 now being shipped on Rls 7.5 sites

See Nortel Technical Bulletin 2009009684, Rev 2 for full details

Important Note for upgrades to CS1000 rls 6
-----------------------------------------------------
It is recommended for all CS1000 customers upgrading to rls 6.0 to have their M3900 sets upgraded to the latest firmware version prior to the core upgrade. Failing to do so will cause problems with M3900 sets during Transfer call scenarios.
A fix for CR (Q01805423-01: 390x during a transfer call have no 'Conf' softkey) was introduced, this fix
contains changes in both core and Taurus firmware, if CS1000 system is upgraded to rls 6.0 without upgrading M3900 sets then during the transfer scenario, after the second leg of the call is answered the connect key will not appear.

All the best

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

FYI, my 7.5 system has the following M3900 firmware versions:

3902 - 8.4
3903 - 9.1
3904 - 9.4
3905 - 9.4

Note that there were hardware version differences in the 3900 sets; Nortel referred to them as Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 phones. I remember that some hardware had minimum firmware versions, and you could upgrade a Phase 2 phone to Phase 3.

The only time I remember the hardware Phase being important was with the full-duplex speakerphone module; it would only work on a 3904 Phase 3 phone. It was enforced by a plastic ridge on the bottom of the adapter that would only allow it to be inserted into a Phase 3 phone base.

I believe what I'm referring to is the Phases. On the back of the 3904 phones there is a sticker that says: NTMN34BA70 REL 02. I've got others that are the same only with REL 07, and REL 03. I'm just trying to figure out what this means (if it means hardware differences, software differences, ect) Thanks for any information.

this may also help.

• Phase 1 firmware vintages are less than version 4.0 (<40 from LD 32 FWVU response).

• Phase 2 firmware vintages are greater or equal to version 4.0 (>= 40 from LD 32 FWVU response) but less than version 6.0 (<60 from LD 32 FWVU response).

• Phase 3 firmware vintages are greater or equal to version 6.0 (>=60 from LD 32 FWVU response).
