Is there any way to upgrade Nortel 3900 series phones via software, a PC and some kind of hardware interface? Getting exclusive access to the Switch for the firmware upgrade process is very difficult on our site.

I'm guessing the answer is no, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Nope. Firmware is uploaded to the 3900 sets via the PBX only.

I was afraid of that, but thanks for writing.

Does anyone know the newest firmware release for 3900 phones? I would like to be sure I've got the newest (90).

Thanks.

Is there something that your phones aren't doing that an upgrade will fix?

If not, why worry about it, until you can spare time to do it.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

set up a schedule in ld 97 to upload firware between hours X and y (you must turn it off 1 hour before midnight routines start). It may take some time, but eventually, your switch will update all the phones.

Hi acewarlock,

We have to upgrade. After the switch INIs, the In Calls key goes dead until key 0 (the other key 0) is pressed. This is universal on all pre-90 firmware release phones. We've also had problems with older releases (pre 8x), randomly going off hook. But there aren't very many of those and most of them have already been updated. I just figure that, if this is going to happen next time, I'd have a better chance of not repeating this excercise if everything was upgraded to the newest possible firmware now.

Thats way I was glad that the last company I worked for didn't want to spend any money on upgrades, I had a nice stable 25.40B that after I cleaned it up, ran for 4 yrs without an INI/SYS or any other problem until I got laid off. Good luck on the upgrades.

Hi MagnaRGP,

We did set up a schedule in LD 97 to push the updates out each night. Problem was that many of our phones weren't uploading -- but the old firmware was deleted. Which left us with dead phones. A forced download would fix it, but it's not a good thing to have 9 or 10 phones out each morning. Our Vendor suggested that we not try to push out firmware updates. We're still having problems with the Switch, so at this point we don't want to take chances.

But we are going to use LD 97. What we've decided to do is dedicate a Digital Line Card to the upgrade and cross it to a patch panel in one of the closets. That we'll schedule uploads to 16 phones a night. If something goes wrong, it won't affect a phone in production.

Thanks to you (and others) for writing.

Hi (again) acewarlock,

We were working off of 25.40B without problems. This stuff with the 3905 is minor compared to what's happening with our 32 IP phones (absolutely *will* not stay registered). And no one currently has a clue why our Switch keeps spitting out AUD031 messages. Our Vendor and two senior techs have been battling these problems for almost two weeks solid.
