Norstar System - Restart ok?

Howdy,

I have a site with a Norstar NT5B01FD-93 DR5 6x16 phone system.

Line one is not working and there is a total of 6 lines, all being used.
When you select line one, there is only a high frequency buzzing and static sound.

I have confirmed with the phone carrier there is no issue on their end, and I have traced the wiring and found there is dial tone until it is connected to the Nortel System. I have replaced the wiring and cables to no resolve.

I was advised to restart the system.

My question is,
In doing so, how likely is the chance for the system to loose its programming or not come back on at all?

Sidenote - the system has been replaced back in 2013.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Replaced but with an old one, these are from 1988.

There is a good chance it will loose programming so take programming notes first.
The notes will help when you bring a new system in too.

My guess is the line port is shot.

As it's an old 6+16, then try either of the following tricks,
Swap out the line cord with another where it goes into the Norstar CPU box first as you should be able to undo the RJ11 connectors. If the fault stays, then it's the port in the CPU and if it moves, then it will be the cable between the CPU and line connector or in the lower wiring box where it terminates.

This is what we would have on the UK versions as the lower box contains all the wiring.

If you have any spare line ports, then it's easier to move it and reprogram it as the ports do tend to fail. If the system is old, then there is a good chance that the capacitor will fail and the programming will be lost which is why moving the port is a better option to do first.

Thanks!

I will hold off from rebooting the device.

I have swapped out the cable and the issue still remains.
I have also swapped lines 1 and 2 with their respected ports, and the issue does not follow but still is present on port 1.

Great post!

If this is the case the line port has gone bad. Only fix is to replace the KSU.

Or as I had suggested to move the line wiring to a spare port if it exists. It's then just a case of reprogramming the new line with the same line pool and changing the existing one to "public" and finally checking that the line assignment for both line ports have been swapped over.
