Hey Tek-Tip Pros,

I'm currently in a dispute over international long distance calls with my telephone/internet provider. They are claiming our PBX system is what the "hackers" were able to make the calls through.

I understand how it is possible - through the voicemail boxes. However, multiple calls were made simultaneously through the same line - up to 20 at a time.

I know the PBX won't let me make multiple calls on the same line. Would it let someone who was dialing into a voicemail box?

Our phone lines are provided through an ISP and are VOIP. My suspicion is that the "hacker" accessed the phone company's access point in our office. From there, they were able to trick their system into letting them make multiple calls on each line.

Any thoughts on my hypothesis?

I would have to agree, the only way I see multi calls on 1 line from the MICS would be a conferencce call. Even then you should only be able to do 2 outbound calls.

You can print out the system and mailbox settings to see which MB is programmed as the hub.

My bet is that the dialing string flashed the line before dialing the LD number thus freeing the line for other callers and allowing simultaneous calls.

Once in the mailbox and you allow outside transfer, by using the link feature in the dial string you can make, depending on the numbers of PSTN you provider will give you, 30 calls on the same lines at once.
