I've got an MICS ... i think 6.1 software.

I'm going to be putting a FAX machine on an ATA-2, and since it used to be on its own dedicated line, I'd really like to make it behave as though one already dialed "9" when it goes off-hook. Since it's not useful for us to try to fax to an internal DN.

This way people who don't pay a lot of attention won't constantly have their faxes fail.

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas for how I can do this? We use 8 copper trunks (no PRI).

I was hoping I could enable "Hotline" > "External" but with no actual number defined--but it does require a number. I guess I could just set that number to some obscure telco Star code like "disable call waiting" or something, but I was hoping for something more elegant.

Thanks for your help!

Yea, since it's a dedicated line for external fax use only then you don't need to use an ATA. Just connect the POTS line directly to the fax.

Now if you want to allow users on the phone system to access that line when the fax isn't in use, then I suggest you use the hotline feature under capabilities. In the dial out number parameter, enter "feature 78 (you will see a funny character in the display). Then have it use "LINE xxx". I would also assign that line to Appr&Ring on the extension you will be using for the ATA.

Ater you set it to external hot line Press feature 78, press ok, next use prime line. Set prime line of ata to pool or specific line.

it *used* to be a dedicated line but we're killing that line to save $$ (we don't need to receive faxes, just send them).

Anyway, that's an awesome, clever idea. I was using *82 as the external Hotline number (unblock caller id) but F78 (is that Pause?) is even better.

The problem with connecting to a POTS line is that no one will know when you are faxing out unless they pick up that line and hear a squeel which may drop the fax. The Feature 78 will add a pause to the hot dial. You can also hot dial 9 and program the ATA to dial from a line pool so if someone uses the fax line to make a call the fax machine will just pick another line.
