I've never tried this but now am being forced to. I'm being forced to tie our existing alert notification system (AlarmPoint by Invoq Systems using Dialogic 4/PCIJCT) through our Norstar system.

Now, the system dials 9, grabs a CO line and calls whoever, that person presses digits, no issues. The system dials another analog port on the system, user or device responds with digits, no problem. An outside user or inside user on an analog port dial the system, press digits, no issue.

ISSUE: The system dials a digital extension or I pick up the phone and dial the system from my 7310 -- As the end user I can press digits all day long but the system doesn't hear them.

Any ideas on how to dial a system hanging off an ATA2 and get it to hear the digits I press?

You cannot generate DTMF tones through an intercom path.
You must use the long tones feature, feature 808 per call to generate DTMS across the intercom path.

If I dial from my 7310 with long tones on, it will generate tones. What if the notification system calls me?

You can generate DTMF's back to the notification system if it calls you on a trunk port. If it rings your intercom path you will need to use F808 to issue tones.

The VMI only supports disconnect supervision and feature 1 to enable MWI to third party mail using analog ports.

Short answer = no

I'm not familiar with your dialogic card or the applications' requirements but dialogic does/did make a digital norstar card. It's been awhile and Dialogic was purchased by Intel but I think it was the D42-NS that supported the Norstar. Not sure if this info will help.

Just a whacky thought.

If one were to install a VMI to enable disconnect supervision and connect the analog port to a trunk port on the KSU the notification system could call the VMI DN number and force the trunk port to ring a set with the correct line assignment. Issuing DTMF's without F808 would be possible but necessarily practical.

You be the judge.

i just found something else in our docs -- the system will support inband signaling -- is that an option?

A digital phone cannot issue DTMF's across an intercom path unless you use F808

okay -- i guess i still don't understand though -- i mean, how do people with non-nortel analog voice mail systems connected via VIMs function? I thought the system had to pass DTMF signaling for that.

The VMI passes DTMF to the vmail application.
The outside caller calls in via trunk port and doesn't require interaction from an internal digital set.
In general the VMI is a horrible application.
Some vendors such as AVT have been using the dialogic D42-NS for mail integration for years and are successful.
Dialogic used to be the manufacturer for all Norstar voice mail voice cards. Nortel started to make their own cards ending their relationship with Dialogic.
This is why CallPilot and Norstar Voice Mail dominate the Norstar install base.
