Hello,

I am trying to setup vlan using cisco 2900 series.
Before that what i checked is that i connect one interface with a router (normal public ip it has like 66.xx.xxx.xx)
on interface fa0/2 (did not assign any ip though in the ios) and using interface fa0/8 connected with another normal switch which will be connected with two pc two check if they can communicate.
problem is , it is ok that fa0/8 if connected with directly any pc i can go to internet but all other interface or port does not show any light or no connection. Should not it be
worked as vlan1 configuartion and similar like if i connect
with other switch some private ip will generate?

later on my plan will be to set vlan2 on int fa0/8 and vlan3 on fa0/9 . BUt first i need to check default it worked.
do i have to do something like dhcp relay with ip address help somewhere i read about that.

Can any one help ?
If no one understand where i stucked i can explain again.

Help is appreciated

Huh?

Post a sh run from the router and switch, and tell us what port pc's are connected to...

Hello,

Please do not get surprised for anything. I am totally
newbie regarding these.

First let you know that this router is not cisco, it is
router(Edgewater) from isp provider.
One ip i am using fro this set up.
from that it connected with cisco 2900 switch.

from ios if i run sh ip
it shows just 1

should not it be like
IP address:
subnet mask:
Default gateway:
management vlan:
name server:
.................

I am not getting "surprised for anything"...I just cannot understand what you need here, much less the problem/symptoms...I am not making fun of your English skills, either...

from netgear router ----> cisco 2900 switch -----> host

interface 8 is assigned vlan 8 others at default vlan 1
so what happening now is host connecting other than
port 8 get internet connection but host connected with
port 8 which is assigned to different vlan is not.
May be netgear router does not support dot1q encapsulation
because 2900 support only ISL encapsulation for intervlan
communication.
Am i true?

****I want to test host on same vlan can communicate but not with other host in other vlan but all host with internet *******

Am i comprehensible now to you? Sir.

You need to answer 2 questions does the netgear router support router on a stick (trunking) and how old and what model and version IOS is on the 2900 . Newer versions of the 2900 supported dot1q whereas the older models did not , if its running at least 12.0.X code it probably supports dot1q trunking .

Hello,

The 2900 model is about 5 years old and it shows version 12.0
Current configuration:
!
version 12.0
no service pad
service timestamps debug uptime
service timestamps log uptime
no service password-encryption
!
hostname Cisco_2900

About the router still finding if it support roter on stick
trunking.

I assigned two port 7 and 8 for vlan 8 and will connect
two pc on each port and will try ping between them.
But ping requires ip address and so i have to assign ip
on those interface????
if it required than suppose ip is for layer 3 device so
without internet (assume that if they are not connected with internet) how will they communicate, i mean what is the way of communication without ip address? is there any way to check other than pinging? nop.
Did i able to make it sense what i am tryinh right here?

Thank you very much for replying.
will be waiting .

I forgot to send how and which port are assigned on vlan

Cisco_2900#sh vlan brief
VLAN Name Status Ports
---- -------------------------------- --------- -------------------------------
1 default active Fa0/1, Fa0/2, Fa0/3, Fa0/4,
Fa0/5, Fa0/6, Fa0/10, Fa0/11,
Fa0/12, Fa0/13, Fa0/14, Fa0/15,
Fa0/16, Fa0/17, Fa0/18, Fa0/19,
Fa0/20, Fa0/21, Fa0/22, Fa0/23,
Fa0/24
2 management active
3 VLAN0003 active
8 test active Fa0/7, Fa0/8
9 test1 active Fa0/9

#sh running-config

interface VLAN1
ip address 66.167.89.15
no ip directed-broadcast
no ip route-cache
!
interface VLAN8
ip address 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0
no ip directed-broadcast
no ip route-cache
shutdown

ip default-gateway 192.168.2.0

snmp-server community private RW
snmp-server community public RO
snmp-server chassis-id 0x0E

one thing is not clear i assigned ip on int vlan 8
but will it assigned on those port 7 and 8? or i have to assign it in the host to ping.
want to assigne ip for port 7 suppose 192.168.2.1
than port 8 192.168.2.2 so they are in same network and vlan they will ping each other.

But it is not working.

VLAN 8 needs to be NATted, or have a public IP address on it.

Does the router support dot1Q trunking?

Also, 192.168.2.0 is a network address, so it cannot be the default-gateway. There are too many things wrong with this---I would get a Cisco 2621 to attach to the netgear, or if it is adsl, get a WIC-1ADSL for the 2621. That's your best bet.
