normal.dotm cant save error

We have a few users starting to use Office 2007. We have run into a problem with a couple of them. When they try to close word they get a popup saying that normal.dotm has been modified do they want to save it. If they say yes, then it tries to save it to their workgroup templates location on the network where they dont have write access. Then they have to click cancel a few times and finally get word to close. Can anybody point me in the right direction to get rid of this error? Why does word want to create a normal.dotm document in the users workgroup templates location anyway??

any comments/suggestions would be appreciated..

I would look for any instances of Normal.dot on the users system, and delete all of them except the one residing in the %\program files\Office directory

After deleting, grant everyone full access rights to the normal.dot file in the program files directory. When the user next starts word they should create a new normal file in their documents and settings folder.


That is assuming you are not tryiong to use a shared normal.dot in the workgroup directory

no we're not intentionally trying to use a normal.dot in a workgroup directory BUT that seems to be where the "confused" machines are trying to create a normal.dot and they dont have access to it. When we search on local machines we dont usually find any normal.dot files anywhere. What I dont understand is why suddenly some machine will think it needs to create or save changes to a normal.dot file and to put it in the workgroup templates directory..

Is there already a Normal.dotm in the workgroup templates folder? if so, and there isn't one in the user templates folder, Word will open the one in the workgroup templates folder and then, if any changes are made, try to save it there afterwards. This would only happen to users who don't have a normal template in their user templates folder.

so if i make sure nobody creates a normal.dot file in the shared workgroups templates folder I should be ok....
