In office 97 you could change the global template normal.dot and affect changes to the template that opens when you start a new document.

I cant find normal.dot in word 2000 so I copied it into
c:\program files\microsoft office\office\1033 where it was in office 97 windows 95 but it doesn't keep the changes I make.
Does Word 2000 use a different global template file???

No. Normal.dot is not created until you have actually run Word. So let's say you just installed it, created a doc but never saved it, etc., I don't think you'll actually have a normal.dot yet. Create an actual document with some text in it. Save it and exit Word.

Now, go look for normal.dot and you'll probably find it under its default:
c:\windows\application data\microsoft.... blah, blah

When normal.dot files become corrupt, we name them abnormal.dot. When Word opens and doesn't find a normal.dot already in existence, it creates its own brand new one.
