I'm about to embark into a position that will expose me to the IVR technology for our callcenter. Where do I begin? I will be sent to training but I want to do my own studying to get more knowledge.

Should I pick up a VXML book? Should I learn visual basic?

Someone guide me in the right direction please..

Sounds like your spinning off from Sprint with your Embarq comment. Not knowing your qualifications it would be difficult to advise were you should start. Learn the basics of the IVR and build a foundation to grow.

depends on the ivr, i am using merridian call pilot with ivr channels and symposium scripting to control call flow in the call center.. to give you a jump start, who's ivr are you getting? if it's sprint don't worry, i worked for sprint for years, they have decent training and techs that will help you get started.. most ivr's are pretty simple, i've never programed that uses v basic, if you have any scripting lang, it will help... it's a lot like html, at first glance it seems impossible, but in small bites, it is simple
