noob with config problems

just updated a mandrake 9.2 system to mandriva 2006. fresh
samba 3 install. had had 2.2.

'smbclient //192.168.1.105/homeserver' produces error 'tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED'

'net join -UAdministrator' produces 'ads_connect: Input/output error' and 'Unable to find a suitable server'

Check that your DNS is working.
Also try to specifying your WINS servers in smb.conf
