non-square image/transparent background?

Hi,
I want to place several images of insects on a web page that form a mouse 'trail' ie they follow the mouse around the page. But the images are square. I don't want the square background, just the image of the insect. I've made the images in Paint shop Pro. At the moment the image is 2 layers, a background which I've made transparent and the insect image. I'm totally fed up with trying to solve this. Is it possible to do?

If you export them as a transparent GIF, you should have no problems.
