non-numeric error sometimes 1

Why do I sometimes get a non-numeric error message when I use the ToNumber? My report has 12 months and sometimes month 3 and sometimes month 7 will stop the report from refreshing with that error message but not always. Sometimes the report completes.

dmccallum: The suggests that your data contains some alpha element. Suggest you use:

If NumericText(field)= true then ToNumber(field) else Val(field)
