Can someone tell me if there is a service, web site, software package, or other technology that allows a person to transfer files from one web site (not own) to another web site (own) without the use of the local computer the person is accessing the internet with.

For instance: say I have this web site where I can store files. I see a file on another web site that I want to save, but the local computer I happen to be using to access the Internet at the time doesn't allow saving files from the Internet so I can download the file from the non-owned web site, then upload it to my web site.

For images you can use something like photobucket or the like however for other types of files, you would I guess need an online virtual hard drive to store the files. Or have a script on the website you own grab the files directly.

However this is most decidedly not the place for this.

You may want to try forums such as:

forum434
forum215
forum216
forum333

Which are more related to your question..
However doing that without the consent of the other website's owner can constitute a felony in certain places. So I would be very careful about doing it.

ok...thanks, i think...

I didn't want to get into code, but that is my fault.

I was looking for something already in place on the web as a service or software package.

The bottom line is this is something we are already doing on the internet, and in the majority of cases it is not unethical or illegal. The only difference I am suggesting is removing the local computer from the transmission equation. Search engines already do this with caching and other spider techniques. I'm not going into the aspect of the right and wrong files handled by this technology. The technology is nothing more than an automatted feature of what we are already doing. The last time I checked, automation was not illegal. Laying that to rest, I will look into these other forums, and I do thank you for your direction.

I understand what you want to do, however I'm not aware of any service that can just grab files off of a predefined website.

Thank you vacunita for your help.

I noticed I am posting with two different logins.

iamspace

and

iamsource

I was signing up to a couple different sites at this time, and one told me the user name was in use. I must have create a dup account here. When I posted, it was the second account created, and the second post was my initial account. I must have created an account here some time in the past. I'm not sure whats what at this point, but I will be using iamsource, if I recall to do so. I use these two ID's when I join services on the web, depending on whether one is in use.

I wrote this spill for those who may be confused about the posts here. I hope I haven't confused anyone more than I am. :)

This is an application that grabs web sites:

but it still involves a local computer. I used it to get our company website on a disk that I could hand customers that didn't have a Web connection (yes that was a long time ago). I put an autorun shellout script on it and it would fire up our Home Page and work exactly like our web site! And it fit on a floppy LOL.

It still needs a host PC but if you have remote access to the server maybe you can make it work for you.

Who is hosting your website? You might want to ask the host if ftp is available and transfer your files that way?
