Non-HP Scanner

I just replaced an HP3380 with a Dell 1600N MFP. I can print and fax on the new device but when I try to scan I get "Unable to communicate with TWAIN device". I have seen issues like this with regards to previously installed HP scanners. I did however do a complete uninstall of all the HP software. But is there something else I need to uninstall?

if memory serves me, you have to click on the tab (from within the MFP software) for obtaining the twain device and select the new MFP.

Thank you for your response. However, there is no location to select a different device. I can see the scanner in Devices and when I try to scan it initalizes the scanner but stops after that with this error.

Did you go into safe mode/device manager and remove the drivers? You may have to remove ALL the printer/scanner drivers there, and re-install your new MFP.

I have removed the HP software but no luck. I did find the answer to the problem though. It seems the scanner is too far away from the PC. It was linked with two 6' extensions plus the original cable. Once I put the PC on the PC direct it worked fine.

What you need to do is start regedit, do a search for hp (and/or your specific printer/scanner) and delete all the entries you find. Then run your fav. registry cleaner.

This should also remove the twain entries that the new device doesn't like.

HP drivers are a real pain in the butt. I have an HP 7110 that I've had to reinstall. Not a fun thing to do. ALSO, when reinstalling, follow the manufacturer's directions exactly!
