Non-existent from nslookup domain

i am getting "Non-existent domain" from the nslookup command.

The output from nslookup as below:

>server: [168.1.1.31]
Address: 168.1.1.31

***[168.1.1.31] can't find Non-existent domain.

but when i enter other domain was ok.

when am i missing

please help...

Can't Find Server Name when Starting Nslookup.exe
When starting the Nslookup.exe utility, the following error may occur:


*** Can't find server name for address w.x.y.z: Non-existent domain


This error occurs when there is no PTR record for the name server's IP address. When Nslookup.exe starts, it does a reverse lookup to get the name of the default server. If no PTR data exists, this error message is returned. To correct make sure that a reverse lookup zone exists and contains PTR records for the name servers.

Nslookup on Child Domain Fails
When querying or doing a zone transfer on a child domain, Nslookup may return the following errors:


*** ns.domain.com can't find child.domain.com.: Non-existent domain
*** Can't list domain child.domain.com.: Non-existent domain


In DNS Manager, a new domain can be added under the primary zone, thus creating a child domain. Creating a child domain this way does not create a separate db file for the domain, thus querying that domain or running a zone transfer on it will produce the above errors. Running a zone transfer on the parent domain will list data for both the parent and child domains. To work around this problem, create a new primary zone on the DNS server for the child domain.

That error message only occurs the first time you startup nslookup in interactive mode...but after that, nslookup works fine.

I am getting a server fail for the SOA of imart.com.my, and I see the registered imart.com.my servers. I query those servers for and I get server failed errors. This isn't going to work.

imart.com.my nameserver = ns2.e-gate.com.my
imart.com.my nameserver = ns1.e-gate.com.my

Hi thanks for all your reply. yes you are right elgrandeperro, i have to change the primary and secondary at my ISP setting but right now i trying to bring up my dns server first.My dns running on win2k server. I already have forward and reverse lookup zone but still getting the same error message. am i missing something?

here is my nslookup result

Are you directly querying the servers you have setup as primary/secondary for imart.com.my? The reason I ask
is because if you query those servers, it should not give you back that error because it should be authoritative for imart.com.my.

nslookup - IPADDRESSOFPRIMARY

>
and

>set type=soa
>imart.com.my.

The output you last gave would be the same I see on the internet, where you get a server failed error when talking to the current NS servers fomr imart.com.my.

Yes i'm directly quering my dns server. I already change my primary dns server to 219.93.44.196 at my ISP. I try to use alias but still cannot.Suppose my should point to my web server 219.93.44.199.

A) I don't see you as authoritative for that zone:

B) If you configured your DNS server to
be 219.93.44.196, it isn't returning any response. To be authoritative for a zone, you must be able to respond to queries for that zone. So either you are blocking port 53, or you haven't allowed queries for that zone.

oops sorry i block port 53 at my firewall. please try to query my dns again 219.93.44.196.

If that is your primary, you are declaring 168.1.1.31 as
the only NS server for imart.com.my. It should be 219.93.44.196.

So the query is going to the wrong nameserver.

Thanks for your reply. Actually 168.1.1.31 is my internal ip and 219.93.44.196 is my valip ip. I'm using firewall to NAT my ip address to valid ip.

Alright i already change my dns ip address to 219.93.44.196 by pass my firewall.

You can NAT, just declare that NS record.

Once your server is declared auth for the zone on the Internet, use a tool like to verify
your records.

BTW, your server is SLOOWWW! Like the reverses lookup is failing.

I see no for this domain.

BTW, one usually configures query for all on the domain and restricts zone transfer to secondaries only. The ability to look at everything gives clues to network and hosts.

I have seen links that describe this for each bind platform.

I would us an A record. In Bind parlance:

A 219.93.44.199

This has nothing to do with reverse, but you need to determine who is in charge of your reverse and how to update it.

This is basic, basic DNS. If you are using Unix servers, read O'Reilly and Associates BIND book, if Windows I am sure there is a equivalent resource.
