Dear All,

Please can you help?

I have a Compaq Proliant 3000 server which runs N.T 4.0 Server service pack 6.

My two network cards are Netelligent 10/100 TX PCI UTP cards running tcp/ip. One card is powered and the other is not powered. They are supposed to be teamed. The ip address is fixed. Testing the cards with Compaq diagnostics showed both cards as healthy: on the same irq and different memory address.

Two days ago the server "lost" network connection. Ping by ip was request timed out and ping by hostname was unknown device.

I logged into the server and ran ipconfig/all to see the settings: no protocols bound to the card or usual tcp/ip details. Went to OS, network neighbourhood, properties and checked to see if tcp/ip was bound to the card: yes. Rebooted server - still no ping. Loopback address -ok. Checked compaq nic software: card with power is showing as degraded with a ? against it; card with no power shows as healthy. Checked cables. patching and switchports - ok

Moved cards to different pci slots - no change.

Server did not faulty rib card this was removed.

I am puzzled why I have lost network connection - does anyone know why this phenomenon is presenting.

Dont have another nic card to use.

Cheers and bamboozled,

1. This is 2009, why in the world are you running NT 4?

2. Buy a new network card.

I used to do this to our Server Team when they were too lazy to retire crappy old servers: mysteriously kill them.

The servers that is.

If this is an old Compaq server, you may have to boot up into the Compaq "Smart Start" CD or utility partition and configure the nic cards. On some older Compaq servers you cannot just move a card from one slot to another and have it still work, you have to tell it to accept the card.

Have reapplied NT 4.0 service pack 6a - server now works as expected - Many Thanks to all who offered advice.
