Our users have managed to get a 'tab' character into an address line - possibly by copy & paste into our VB front end. We can close this loophole in VB but need to correct the file.

Can anyone think of away in which I can use simple SQL to search a column in a table for special characters?

Try something like
select * from
myfile where hex(mycolumn) like '%29%'
