I have a Maxtor 6V200E0 hard disk of 250Gb and I cannot make it run at low rpm. In the morning it starts quietly but then as I begin surfing the internet it goes into higher rpm (noisy mode) and refuses to come down even after stopping all work and rebooting.

I tried setting quiet opperation with the Hitachi Ftool Acoutic Management to no avail.

Before I had a new motherboard installed a couple of weeks ago, the high rpm operation would kick in only whenever I'd make heavy use, i.e. copying DVDs, or CPU-intensive work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

As far as I'm aware you can't alter the speed at which the hard drive spins! I think you're referring to the CPU cooling fan which may well vary in rpm depending upon how hot the CPU is getting. The fan itself may well have a heat sensing device (thermistor) built into it, or it may be controlled from a sensor on the motherboard. Try changing the fan, and also check that the heatsink is properly fitted onto the CPU. Note: If you separate them, you'll need to clean off the mating surfaces and re-apply a thin smear of fresh heatsink compound before refixing back in place.

Yup! the hard drive just spins up and stays spinning at it's designed speed (5,400/7,200 or even 10,000rpm) depending on the desktop drive fitted.
It's gotta be the CPU fan, as Roger said.
If yours is an OEM (original that came with the CPU) then there are better "quieter" options but make sure that it isn't just blocked with dust before ordering a new one.
Infact blow out all the dust bunnies at least once a year as a matter of routine maintenance.

I have had a similar problem and fixed it by setting my Swap file to a very large fixed size.

I know what you mean about the acoustic settings in software, but I have never asked myself exactly how it works. RPM, Head Speed? I have read that the quieter, the slower the drive. Anyone know?
