Hi
I just got a western Digital Hard drive, works fine, but it 'whirrs' a little.
Whats the best way to quieten it down ?
I've seen silencer Caddys for about 30 quid, are they any good ?

Thanks

I have read about suspending the HDD in a 5.25" drive bay using large latex rubber bands, threaded through the sides and held in place by a pencil, here's a more sophisticated approach:

Is the WD drive in question a 10K Raptor? They are notoriously noisy. Be careful with any device that may interfere with cooling.

There are also grommets available that de-couple the drive, but if it's a spinning noise it might not go away.

Take note of Tony's ideas above. If, however, the hard drive is not actually transmitting vibrations to the mountings and the case, you may have to resort to some soundproofing techniques in order to reduce ambient noise. You could try attaching soundproofing material to the inner surfaces of the case, but it's important to make sure you don't reduce or block airflow.

Thanks for those comments.
It's not vibration its actually whirring sound. So it looks as if I should go with a silencing caddy.

Thanks

This is possible with any hard drive out there, just like DOAs.

Also, some drives can be slowed down by using the Software that the Manufacturer supplies...

This is called ACCUSTIC SOUND MANAGEMENT, or ASM for short...

Are you very sure it is the hard drive and not the power supply or one of the other fans? I've had similar problems where I tried to quieten the drive only to find that the sound was the same when the drive was disconnected. Eventually it led me to the CPU fan.
