I've just had a sata 200gb disk. Sometims it makes a strange noise....It's not the fan or usual disk activity noise - it's a loud grunching noise.

Does anyone have any ideas why it's doing this and/or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance

Penny :)

Is it under warranty? Sounds like bad bearings. Replace it.

You can go to the mfgrs website and download the diagnostics program for it, you can put it on a floppy or a cdr. Use it to check your h drive out.
I agree with micker to the point that you shouldnt trust this drive to hold your data as the noise you described is the noise of a hard drive that is going to go bad on you.
If under warranty you should be calling the mfgr to get an rma number to return it for replacement, but they will likely have you run the diagnostics anyway.
