I just installed a new server with 5.1 Small Business Suite. Custom install, rather than express install was used. There is an external modem connected to the Server COM port. We have the Groupwise email setup and working for all the users. I can access the ISP and email is being sent and received, so the com port, the modem and the isp are all working fine. I can ping the internet from the Server, but not a workstation. I called Novell for support, but it was a disaster! The first 2 techs didn't have a clue and the 3rd tech (guru) had an attitude. He did indicate it sounded like a routing problem, which I agree, but his suggestions didn't help. I cannot contact him and no one will return my calls. A possible clue - while running NICE, the error "unable to set DNIP: Domain Name -608" appears, but the changes get implemented.
I have checked all the FAQs on the Novell site and all the suggested settings in INETCFG have been verified.
There are no SP's installed yet.

Dude,

You've gotta routing problem. The workstations should be using the server as a gateway to the internet. If you run inetcfg and check out the protocols -> tcp/ip you can check your setup. inetcfg is cool and easy to use.

Secondly, I think you got DNS trouble (DNIP error message). I assume you're running a DNS server on your NetWare box and your clients (workstations) are querying it. Have you enabled your DNS server to query the ISPs DNS servers? If this is not the problem, you should check you don't have NetWare/IP installed. NetWaere/IP is old and shitty anyway.

Right, once you've sorted the routing, you should be able to ping IP addresses NOT hosts themselves! So, you could try ping 192.233.80.5, but not ping Once you've sorted out your DNS, you should be able to ping
Naturally I assume you're doing DNS as your primary naming service in the client properties.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions - I'll experiment some more and post again. BTW - the workstations are using the server as a gateway. I tried pinging both addresses and names. DNS trouble sounds logical.

Dude,

Yeah if you got the NetWare box routing over both the interfaces and you've checked out your IP filtering, then it WILL work, unless you got other devices further down the line....
