I have an Compaq 5315KS desktop that gives a "no video signal" message on the monitor when powered on. I have switched power supplies and disconnect the floppy and cd player in an effort to find the problem. I get this error even if I hook the monitor up to a video board or the video port on the motherboard. Is it the battery or is the motherboard bad.

did u check the monitor cable / monitor on another pc 2 verify that its working?
to my understanding, the desktop has onboard video and u get this error, also when u add another video-card it reports the same error?
also check bios for primary video card setting to onboard/pci/agp, whatever applies 2 u

Sounds like your monitor cable may be bad. I agree with Lemon, check on another computer, and try another monitor on this computer if you can, to rule things out. If the Cable is not detachable from the monitor, then maybe a new monitor is in order.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

I put the monitor on another pc, it works fine. The Compaq computer does not beep on startup. I really think its the motherboard or the maybe CMOS battery. Can't get into bio with no display on monitor.

If its not the cable, and it does it on both video devices. Then maybe it is the motherboard.

Detach everything including all hard drives (including your OS HD) and all optical drives and remove all RAM sticks.

Without anything attached it should produce a beep, a "no ram" beep at the very least.

If it still won't beep, then its pretty much dead. And you need a new MB.
