Hi all,

During bootup, case lights come on, including blue cathodes, fans, etc, I get no beep codes, the screen initially flashes the indentity of the vid card installed, then goes to intell splash page, then to the unable to load windows screen with many options such as boot in normal mode, safe mode, etc.

The setup:
mobo - intel 865perl (new)

cpu - intel p4 2.4c boxed (new)

memory- corsair 3200 ddr 1024mb twinx dual channel (new) (1 stick each installed in channel A raid 0, channel B raid 0).

video - gainward geforce fx5600 128mb ddr, ultra 760 tv/dvi. (new).

hard drive - wd 40gb (from previous computer...not new). Verified working, and has win xp installed.

power supply - icute 430watt (new).

Only things on mobo right now are cpu, mem, video card.

Board has current BIOS (verified on intel site).
In BIOS, verified cpu, memory, etc.

I've had problems with "no signal" on other builds, but those were memory problems. The twin corsair sticks are installed properly, 1 in channel A raid0 and the other in channel B raid0. The bios recognizes them (1024mb) as well.

Any ideas on why I can't get the OS to load?

Thanks.

Has that win-xp disk ever worked with theese components.
or does the xp-disk(40GB) have an install with other mother board and components.

Please explain what has been done / changed / how
since it was a working system .

Changing motherboard usually demand a new/repair install of xp.

thanks for the reply syar2003!

the more i dug into the research on this "problem", the more I've discovered that yes, a fresh install of the o/s is more than likely the solution here.

everything on my new box is new, except for the hard drive which has the winxp already installed on it. So, yes...winxp was installed on that hard drive on a different motherboard.

question though, why would the o/s install be tied specifically to the motherboard (the older one in this case)? it would seem (apparently wrong though) that an already formatted HD with an O/S already on it...could be plopped into a system with a new motherboard (assuming of course same IDE connections).

Thanks.

Well it's not that simple.
Motherboard chipsets such as controller for
sound, ide ,pci-bus ,usb ,agp , is core components and if
"new" mobo use other chipsets you have trouble.
Then there is the bios enumeration of the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) with ACPI compliant systems.

There is though one good thing about xp ,
the reinstall with repair option .

The OS (XP) configures it'self to run with a specific set of components and their drivers, the OS in most cases can handle small changes to this config but as you can imagine, swopping out the hard drive and plonking it in a completely new setup is just too much for it to handle.
A clean install is always the best bet in these circumstances.

Well, that did it. A fresh o/s install.
Thanks all for the info...helps to know why this is needed as well!
