I have been given an IBM RISC System/6000 250 running some version of AIX 4, and do not know any of the user names or passwords for any account. Is there any way that I can attempt to recover the root password? I would simply reload, but I dont have a CD ROM for it, and no AIX CD's. I can get into it with a dumb terminal to the login prompt, and have tried single user mode...but still wants a password. Could I hook it up to another UNIX box and try and remove the password from the password file? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi,

what make and model is your server ?

Have you got a mksysb tape for your server ?
if so , you can boot from that tape , you will have to interrupt system boot depending on what type of server you have and select tape as bootable 1st device , then select option to start maintemnace shell , and start rootvg with filesystems mounted . Once you get a # prompt just use passwd command to change password. Then change the bootlist back to normal if different i.e. ( bootlist -m normal -o ( will lists it) bootlist -m normal hdisk? cd rmt0

and reboot your server ?

The other thing is , can you remotely login to this server from your other servers or can you issue a remote command
from your other server to this server i.e. rcp filename thisserver:/tmp

successfully , or do you get permission denied ?
