i've recently built a system from scratch and everything works great, but i can't get the usb ports to work at all. here's what i've done so far...

1. reinstalled the mobo drivers and downloaded the updated drivers from the manufacturer
2. reinstalled winxp
3. checked all jumper settings on mobo (they're correct)
4. checked all bios features settings for usb (correct)
5. made sure their were no IRQ conflicts between other cards, etc.

i should mention that the mobo came with a front usb panel and i've disconnected that and the back two ports still don't work.

my question is now...where do i go from here?

As with other posts, these questions need to have more details, such as mobo brand / verson, cpu, ram etc.

Since you have done the usual stuff of checking everything, and since I would expect USB to be enabled by default on new systems, the next thing would be to call the company you purchased it from as they should know if its a fault or due to some odd setting.

Take the whole system back to the shop and ask them to look at it. If they are a good company this is without charge unless its obvious that you caused the failure. Tez

Backups are great but checking if you can restore is more fun.

it is a soyo dragon board with an amd 1900+ cpu with 128 mb RAM.

Are USB ports showing up in XP devices list?

Are you sure USB cables are connected correctly to Motherboard? Correct orientation and pins are not offset?

Is it correct USB assembly for your motherboard?

Tez has good point about checking with vendor tech support you purchased board from.

these are onboard USB so they are hooked up right. yesterday i flashed the bios to the most recent. i know the device i'm using works, so i'm stuck. yes, xp says there are usb ports but the device never loads. i'm using a usb mouse and i've tried other usb devices.

thanks for the help so far, i'll keep you posted.

Could just be bad USB ports.

I noticed you already re-installed XP.
But, you might try deleting USB ports in device mgr and letting XP re-install them.
Doubt it will work though. I'm betting on a bad motherboard or some kind of BIOS problem.

yeah i should have mentioned i've already done that. i'm thinking it is bad ports and looking for ways to just send it back to the maufacturer since it's still under warranty.

thanks everyone.
