No thumbanail for .jpg or .gif files but thumbnail ticked? 1

Somehow I lost all my file associations (specifically for .gif and.jpg files) and although I have restored iexplore as the program to open them in explorer, I no longer get to see a thumbnail of them even though that is enabled on web page view! I can get to see a thumbnail of a WORD HTML document after I downloaded VML so am I missing something for those image files?
I would greatly appreciate any guidance thank you.
