Hello everybody

One of our customers has a old novell server. now it says that there is no space left on sys!

can somebody tell me, what i can delete. i think its some logfiles and temp-stuff. but i dont know much about netware. i dont even know how to logon to the server :)) the good thing is, i have physical access to the server.

every hint would be most appreciatet, thanks!

btw, its netware 4.2 running on the server. i know this is a netware5 forum. i couldnt find a netware 4.2 forum.

How are you going to delete stuff if you can't even log in. Doing what you need from the physical console is going to be very difficult without an intimate knowledge of how NetWare is put together.

You really need to know more about the setup of this server. For instance, is the customer using the SYS volume for data storage (not recommended but possible)? And as Marv suggests, a NetWare server is not like a Windows server whereby you can stand at the server itself and delete stuff. You would be better off logging into the server from a workstation and performing maintenance from there.

Hi,

load netbasic at the console
type in then shell

Then you can delete stuff directly on the 4.2 console but take care what you delete !!!!!

I actually held off suggesting that as it is very dangerous for someone with limited NetWare experience to attempt to use the console to do maintenance of the nature required. It would be far easier and safer to use a workstation in my opinion.

Also assumes that the server is able to mount the sys volume. Many times when SYS is full, the server crashes, and then it won't mount. In some cases, you have to expand the volume just to be able to mount it. If you are at this point, it's more complicated than what I am willing to discuss here.

@ thelad and marvhuffaker

its true what you said...but he asked for a possible way, thats one possible way.

Without any knowledge of a system to delete stuff is always not a good idea....

To me, this is more of an ethics question than anything.

If I am at a client site, assuming a mixed Novell / Windows environment, and one of their Windoze servers is down.. I don't touch it. I call someone that knows what the hell they're doing. If I try to fix it and make it worse, when I have little or no experience with it, I have just set myself up for a lawsuit. This is especially true in a situation where there is a high chance of data loss.

What hatorihanzo should do is go to and find a qualified Novell expert in their area that can assist.
