description says it all. just bought a sb live (oem) and can't get sound with xp. downloaded new drivers and didn't fix the problem. not digital speakers, plugged into green port. I also changed pci ports with no luck..any suggestions?
Does XP detect the sound devices? Check in control panel.
Also, did you disable sound in BIOS?
More info would help. ~Apex1x

Yeah xp detects the sound card and installs the drivers just fine. They are ok in the device manager and I don't have a onboard sound card so I can't disable sound in the bios. Need to know anything else?
If there are any legacy devices sitting around, disable them and try again.
Another thing to try is go into safe mode, go into control panel, and remove all the drivers. Then reboot in normal mode and get XP to detect and set it up again.
Just to troubleshoot further, try different speakers, and make sure the volume is turned up. ~Apex1x

Yes I do have legacy devices...it says legacy audio drivers and legacy video capture devices. I disabled them and that didn't work. I also removed the drivers in safe mode and xp reinstalled the drivers and I had no luck with that either. Any more suggestions?
Make sure your mixer volume controls are turned up and nothing is muted. Make sure speakers are plugged in correct jack and have power applied and if there is a volume control on the speakers, make sure it is turned up. If you are not getting CD sound, make sure your cable from the CD-ROM is connected to the sound card. There is a digital option in your multimedia options; try it enabled and disabled and see if it makes a difference. There are options in Windows Media Player for digital or analog playback. Jim

I just uninstalled the aureal card and put the sb live in, so all the settings are the same. The volume controls are up and not muted. Double checked the jack, speakers are powered and turned up. I've also tried turning on and off the digital option. Any more suggestions?
You said you removed drivers in safe mode. Did you remove everything sound related in device manager in safe mode and re-start and let XP re-install the drivers? It sounds like you might have a bad sound card if that doesn't work. You looked at the mixer settings after you installed the new drivers?? Jim

Now I know I had a similar problem with my Creative 5.1 when I first installed it.
Trouble is I cannot remember exactly what it was only that some box was checked when it shouldn't have been.
Digital out? something like that? anyhow I nearly took the thing back untill I stumbled on this one setting that bought it to life!! Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.
boy I'll tell you I've been working with computers along time and I've never felt like such an idoit...I had the wrong plug going into the card, it was my input rather than output.
Oh yeah!! we have all done things like that ! glad to see it's fixed, the creative 5.1 is a great sound card good choice.
