I have the usual beeps and clicks playing through my speakers when I open and close programs, so they are hooked up properly. I get no sound off cds in either drive although they appear to be playing. No sound off web pages.
I can't figure it out. Any suggestions?
(running win 98)

Is a player launched when you put a CD in? Have you checked the volume control to be sure your sources are not muted? Internet sounds usually depend on a player like WMP or the Real player. Do you have those? Has the sound ever worked? If so, what changed just prior to when it stopped working?

Thanks for the questions/tips:)
Real audio launches. It appears to be playing. The volume is not on mute. It used to work. I noticed it stopped a couple months ago but do not recall changing anything (but I could have installed something) Is it irrelevant that windows noises do play through speakers? I unistalled real audio and it did not play through wmp either. I reloaded real audio and still no sound.

Windows sounds play through the Wav input. CDs would play via the CD input. Windows noises through the speakers mean that the speakers are connected, and the sound card is working (at least for wav input). What version of Windows? Have you checked for problems via the control panel? Under 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in the control panel, click the audio tab. What is the playback device? Click on volume. Is anything muted or down at the minimum level?
