I have done everything i could possibly think of but i still have no sound on my Dell XPS M1730. could someone please help?

Your post is a little lacking on information, what have you done to this point, what were the results? Fill us in a little more

i have installed all drivers that i thought where needed, i disabled then reinabled the sound card itself hoping to "jog" into working lol. Also pluggled head phones in and no sound thru them either. I tried a registry cleaner hoping that would help but it didnt. thats about all i did, i believe. sorry for being so vague, i am a little flustered over all this. It seems like it something soo simple yet it has eluded me thus far.

Is this a new installation of Vista or did the sound stop out working of the blue?

No chance that the sound card is turned off in the BIOS - doubtful because you said you installed the drivers. So, sounds like your sound card might have died.

You already tested with headphones, so that kind of rules out the speakers. If you're sure the drivers are installed and there are no problems in device manager, not sure what else to conclude.

Try one of Microsoft's sound FixIts:

If that doesn't find any problems, I'd say sound card is dead. Only other option is to reinstall Windows if you want to be totally sure.
OR
If you had another old sound card (PCI, PCI-E) you could slap it into the machine and see if that would produce sound.

Check the sound devices, does it list speaker out? I ran into a machine that was set to default to projector out, and it failed to go back to speakers once it was disconnected from the projector.

Never looked to see that it was a laptop - oops. Forget about "putting in card" suggestion.
