Hi Everyone,
I have serious issue with my Internet Explorer 7. IE does not open any website for me. The internet is working fine as i am able to use Firefox to surf. I tried running comboFix, spybot and avg to scan the computer and it somewhat comes clean.

Along with that i have also done the reset from the Tools>Advanced>Reset explorer settings, but the default "customize your settings page" does not show up.

I also see that some of the option in the tool menu are disabled (full screen, menu bar).

Pls let me know what registry changes should i check to resolve this issue.

Appreciate your inputs.

Regards,
MJ

I take it you have already cleaned out your Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History etc? This link also talks about faulty Index.dat which you can delete and rebuild.

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files

Have you checked what is set in Group Policy for Internet Explorer before you wade into the Registry?

How is IE from "Safe Mode with Networking", or from Normal Mode but as another user?

310560 - How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP

811151 - How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile

I notice you have reset IE back to default settings which may reset Add-ons, but have you tried running it with No Add-ons?

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Internet Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Thank you for your input.. i did try couple of things as you had mentioned in your last email.

The only part i did not follow was the Group policy for Internet Explorer. can you pls list the changes or the settings that i need to look out for in that policy
I am able to get to websites from IE which are in my favorites. If i type a url in the address bar it would not open up the site. it will stay about:Tabs.

Also i noticed that my yahoo messenger has not been able to connect since this issue.

I hope you can further pinpoint what next.

Regards,
MJ

The Group Policy mention was just a general comment on my behalf to have you look at the options in there specific to IE and make sure they seem to be sensible and correct.

Launch Group Policy via GpEdit.msc in Start Run.
Look for Internet Explorer in User Configuration/ Administrative Templates/ Windows Components.

In IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced/ Settings/ near the bottom of the list is a heading "Do not search from the Address Bar". what have you got ticked in there?

What about your Firewall?

is it active and is it blocking IE perhaps?

Ben

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!!

Linney: I was able to get the GPedit and saw almost all the settings are "Not confgured" under Internet Explorer (and its sub tree)

BadBigBen: Yes my firewall is disabled and its not blocking IE as i am able to open sites from my favorites, its just when i type a url in the address bar it doesn't open i also found that some of the settings under tools are disabled like fullscreen, menu bar. Even if i change my homepage it still goes to the customize your settings and doesn't open the page.

It seems some type of policy edit has been done in my system whereby such options are disabled or blocked and i dont know which policy/options it could be?

regards,
mj

How about in Safe Mode with Networking?

Tony

Users helping Users...

Hi,
Once again thanks for the quick input.

As far as safe mode w/networking its the same problem. no site opens up when i type the url in the address bar and also the options are disabled (menubar, fullscreen). Same symptom with Internet Explorer with no add-ons in regular mode

I tried the links given by Linney in his last message, downloaded IEAK 7 and created the ini (setup) file and started the download process but its been sitting on the same installation screen (downloading updates for windows explorer 7 with the status bar rolling left to right).

I think its not connecting to the microsoft site either!!

MJ

Hi,
Wahnula: I think that would be my last resort..but again if the windows xp settings aren't allowing then do u think the IE8 would work fine?

Well I did a quick look through you HJThis log & immediately notice a couple of things worth questioning:

You have the WatchGuard VPN client software running - are you connected through a VPN tunnel (or is it trying to)?

Have you tested with the TrendMicro proxy service disabled?

Remove the following with HJT:

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)

other than that the log is clean...

as SMAH mentioned, check that WatchGuard, and another thing jumped at me from the LOG, you said FireWall was turned off but I see that TrendMicro Internet Security is running...

have you uninstalled it and then tried to connect to a website (e.g. MSN), as just turning them off does not stop the service running in the back ground...

My notion is that you have a firewall rule that blocks IE or the rules are messed up, especially after the last months Updates (DNS Patch 951748) ... alternatively deinstall the firewall (do not keep the rules), reboot and reinstall it...

Ben

Hi BadBigBen

When I use to parse for problems it also showed the following 2 possibilities:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
Ctfmon.exe
"CoolWebSearch Ctfmon32 parasite variant"

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll
Winsock Hijacker
Every time I've seen this its been a bad thing

Can you suggest a preferred site to parse HJT data?

sam

Freestone and smah

Yes I know them both and was a bit surprised to see them tagged for removal; hence the question:

Can you suggest a preferred site to parse HJT data?

sam

I have removed the Trend Micro completely and the entries mentioned in HijackThis listing.

Now i do see that in my IE7 under Internet Options->Advanced right above the OK and Cancel button i have a warning line which states as follows:
"Some settings are managed by your system administrator"

So what GPolicy should i change to become the system administrator, though i did check in the Cpanel under user accounts my login name has the administrator rights.

Thanks,
MJ
