No Server Service on Windows 2000 Professional 1

I am trying to install a package and the vendor has advised me that I need to have a service called server running on Windows 2000 professional. This service isn't listed under the services list presently. Do I need to install something else?

You should be able to go to Administrative Tools and Services and see the service "server" running in the list.

I believe that may be installed with the IIS component in the Windows Setup, go to the Add Software and add the IIS from the Windows components. Make sure you add the web server along with common files, documentation, service manager, and whatever else you may want. I installed all of it and olny start the portions I want.

I have added all of IIS and still don't have a server service. Do I need to install anything else?

I just checked the dependencies for the server service and it includes the Computer Browser and RPC. Check that you have the File and Printer sharing installed and the Client for Microsoft Networks installed. Also in the Client for Microsoft networking, check the properties to see it it is set to Windows locator for the RPC Service.

Thanks for bearing with me!
I have now installed all the add on components, apart from Message Queueing Services. I have an RPC service running. How do I check that the File and Printer sharing is installed and the Client for Microsoft Networks is installed?

Right click on My Network and select Properties. When the next window appears you should have your local network and dial-ups showing, right click on the local network and select properties, you should see the file and printer sharing and the Client for Microsoft Networks in the list.

I right clicked on "my network places" and selected properties. There are two icons: "make new connection" and my dial-up. Am I missing something?

Do you have any network installed at your location? I believe I was wrong in assumming you were on a network since the Server service was required for your application. Do you have a network adapter installed in your system?

The vendor stated I need a server service to be running. However, it can run locally on my PC. I don't have a network card.

Looks like you will have to fake it then. I have a network so I will try to see what can be done.

Double-click the Make New Connection and a dialog will appear that gives you a choice of connections. Try the "Accept incomming connections" then select the next button.

Select the Do Not Allow virtual private connections, then next

Select the Administrator to allow someone access then next

If you do not see the TCP/IP protocol, select install to install it. Choose an IP address such as 192.168.0.1 (which works for the Internet Connection Sharing). In the properties of the TCP/IP, unselect Allow callers to access my local area network. Select the OK from the install and properties of the TCP/IP and click next.

You should now give the network connection a name and click finish to complete. You may have to do a reboot to finish it.

If this doesn't work, I would recommend getting a cheap network adapter that you can pickup for $15-$20 and install it. Not a bad idea anyway since you would then be ready for a network or DSL.

I have installed a network card. After a few problems, I ended up doing a clean install of windows 2000 professional. I now have a server service and the vendor product is working.
