After having lightning directly strike the house, it took some TVs, and seems to have messed up this computer, not allowing it to connect to any router for internet. My computer is connected fine thru 2 different routers, so i know it isn't that. This computer however when directly connected to the modem, works fine, but once connected to any router, the connection light blinks, and "A network cable is unplugged" tool tip comes up from the bottom right. I've tried some registry fixes, and patches for the "limited internet" but they haven't helped. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the Network card, but that still hasn't helped.
Computer is running XP pro, SP2. Any help is greatly appreciated, as it stands, when this computer is online, none of the others can be. :(
thanks!

The lightening stike may have hosed the Flash memory in the router. Most come with a little reset switch that you push with a paperclip. Maybe try resetting the router to the factory configuration and reconfiguring it?

I've tried that. But all other computers will work from the routers. We've also tried varios different routers on this computer. Is this not a bug in Win XP, and the networking card in this computer may not be able to use any routers anymore?

You could try the following at a command prompt on the problem PC:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

This resets the TCP/IP stack on your PC.

hmm, tried that command in prompt, however it still didn't fix the problem :(
Do i need to post the info from resetlog.txt here? would that help?

Just maybe your connecting cable from router to the computer is fried. Change the cable and try.

Britehouse gave us some free cables when they were here that we tried. that hasn't resolved it eathier. :( I guess i keep searching the web. I can't be the only person in the world this has ever happened to.

Have you tried plugging the computer into different ports on the Router? It could be the specific port that is fried?

Is the NIC card set for auto-negotiation, i.e. not strapped to any one speed and/or duplex mode?

I have resolved the issue.

I went to the Problem PC's Network adapter settings, than connection type, chose 10base T half, and than it started seeing the Router. So from there i knew i had it. lol Went in router settings, and renewed IP, now all is working great.
thanks for all of your time in trying to help me.

Ajent,

I had the same problem with a new computer running XP and SP2. I could connect to the internet directly to my cable modem, but I could not get an ip from my router when I had that connected.

Your post solved my problem. Thanks
