At 0 knowledge level with HP-UX so be easy on me! :) I'm new at this firm and finally have time to look at this HP box that I inherited. Of course, no one knows the root password. Anyway, is it possible to boot off a CD and reset the root password like you can with Solaris or does HP have it's own way of dealing with this?
Thanks a bunch!

Power the machine off. When you power on, during the boot process you will see on the console a message to the effect that you have ten seconds to press a key to interrupt, do this and the machine will go to a prompt like this
ISL>
at this prompt type hpux -is
you will next get a # prompt, at this stage type
#passwd
and you will be asked twice to supply a new passwd (twice for valiadation). After this at the next # prompt type
#shutdown -r
this time don't interrupt during the ten second period. The machine will reboot into it's default run level and you will be able to login as root supplying the password that you set.
