Hey everybody.

I upgraded a laptop from Windows 2000 Pro to Windows XP Pro today. I'm using a local admin account to install and uninstall programs. A few of them have worked. However, whenever an installer tries to access the registry I get an error message. For instance:

MS Office 2003 Setup
Error 1402 Setup cannot open the registry key (bla bla bla). Verify that you have sufficient permissions to the registry or contact your IT Dept. for assistance.

I have been unable to install:
Java
Flash
Shockwave
MSOffice
Windows Updates

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this without formatting? There's a program on here that I can't lose. (of course)

Thanks,

EM

What if any restrictions were applied via Group Policy in the Windows 2000 Pro machine, these may have been carried over?

Have a read of this thread, look at the example of using SubInAcl, adapt it to your needs to get the Registry Permissions corrected.
