On a Netware 4.11 network, using System Policies, Win98 machines have no right click on the desktop, whereas Win95 machines do. Actually the Admin login does have it, but no other users.<br>Poledit does give me a disable option, but that is not selected. <p>Peter Relph<br><a href=mailto:peter.relph@herbertonss.qld.edu.au>peter.relph@herbertonss.qld.edu.au</a><br><a href= State School P-10</a><br>

Perhaps the policies do not include access to the display control panel.<br><br>Just a thought. <p> <br><a href=mailto: > </a><br><a href= plain black box</a><br>

What policy are you looking at? Default, Group, or User specific?<br><br>Win98 enforces policies in reverse of Win95.<br><br>Win98 = Default first then Group/User.<br>Win95 = User first, Group, then Default.<br><br>If the box appears gray then the setting will be whatever is in effect...by policy or USER.DAT. Related problem I need to fix on my Desktop Win98 SE PC. I'm not on a network and don't know how to access the information in my User.DAT file to set the switch back on. I've posted the following elsewhere in this forum.

Problem With Right-Click on Desktop or in Explorer

Suddenly I can no longer right-click on my desktop to access an items properties, align Icons, etc. The problem also exists in an Explorer window. I can highlight an item with the right button with no problem.

The right button acts normally anywhere else (e.g., within an application or on the system tray.)

I'm guessing something is not right in an INI or the registry. Anyone have any Ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Peter,

I don't use Poledit, but is there a policy regarding Active Desktop, specifically:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

NoViewContextMenu

This disables context menus for the desktop, start button, and explorer.

That shouldn't read ActiveDesktop.

If you use .adm templatesa, check the shell.adm

I'll have to fire-up RegEdit and check for that string. I don't know how that could have been added/changed. I suppose it is something that Tweak UI or Xteg X-Setup could have messed with! Brian

Well I almost did what you recommended. I changed the value from 1 to 0 using PC Magazine's Registry Detective and Registry Editor+.

That fixed it! You get your star! Brian
