Hi

I've heard a rumor that Microsoft are scrapping Access - is this true and if it is, what is taking it's place?

Please let me know as I have only just learnt/built and implemented a fantastic database!!!!

Thanks
Sarah

I hadn't heard that rumour. They still have Access in Microsoft Office 2003, which is the latest version of Office.

Anything's possible, I suppose.

Some of what you have heard is true -- Microsoft is, in some ways, scrapping Access. But not in all ways. Keep in mind that Microsoft has an excellent record of supporting old platforms.

First, the JET database engine (.MDB files) is no longer actively in development. So don't expect anything new on that front.

Second, Microsoft is pushing the .NET framework and the new Sharepoint server and InfoPath, all of which cut into Access' user base some.

Third, there hasn't been anything dramatically new introduced in Access since Access 2000 (the Access Data Project, .ADP files).

So you are right, in some ways.

However, again, remember that Microsoft has an excellent track record of support for its old programs. So even if Access is totally omitted from the next version of Office, you can bet that there will be some option for you to upgrade, reasonably easily.

Everyone seems to be nervous about all their existing Access-based applications. Well, that's fine, but remember: Microsoft has an excellent track record of support for its old programs. There are a whole lot of Access files sitting around in the corporate universe, and Microsoft knows this.

So there. I hope that answers your question as well as it can be answered.

I seem to remember this rumour floating around after Access 2000 was released, and then again after Access Xp. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it until Microsoft announce that there won't be any more versions of Access.

Thanks very much for that!! I thought that I might have to 'sweat blood' over a new application!!!!

Cheers
