I have just built a PC using:
Gigabyte GA-8INXP mother board
Compro GeForce4-MX440 VideoMate 64MB 3.3ns 8xAGP Video Card
Geil DDR Ram 2x512 MB PC3200
Intel P4 2.53GHz processor
Maxtor ATA133 7200 60GB hard drive (from a previous PC)
WIN XP PRO
Office XP PRO

When I first power the PC, I get the following message on my monitor:

74.7kHz/166.4Hz
Frequency out of range
Try other resolutions

Monitor is
Because there is no display, the built-in menus of the monitor don’t work. The monitor is 6 months old and works perfectly on the old PC.

I have tried 3 monitors and one (Samsung LCD) gives the message Video mode not supported and the other (HP) gives no display at all.

I notice that the monitor specs on the dse site (above) the resolutions are 30~86kHz;30~160Hz. Is this the problem?

Because of this problem, I can’t get past GO to do the BIOS setup. What do you suggest I do to make progress?

Ross,
you r n a place I would love to visit someday!

What are the post code beeps from the PC if any? have you tried another video card? If so whats the outcome? I say this because you have tried 3 displays w/ simialar results in each case (basically no display) on the same machine, the first thing to suspect at this moment is the video card. It might be stuck in a mode from a previous installation or its just DOA, it happened often enough with me that I had to send back 3 of them. Also you migght want to remove items from the system one by one, even you harddrive. You will get errors but you might also find the issue.

Good luck

Glenn

Hi Glen

Thanks for the suggestions. I disconnected all the drives (floppy and the 2 hard) resetted the video board, rebooted, hit DEL to enter setup and it started. Reconnected the drives and it now sometimes boots. So I'm making good progress. It now stops when trying to open WINXP as the hard drive is transfered from the old machine and windows doesn't like the complete new hardware. How do I get over this one.

Regards

Ross

The quick and dirty way would be to boot from the XPcd and run setup again, choosing the repair option. If this is not a preferred option, first port of call is to reset the cmos jumper on the motherboard. WinXP should start to ask for or install new drivers as its starting up. Failing that, can you boot into safe mode, and install the required drivers from there? Of course you may still have to go through the pain of reactivating, if this problem is a result of the hardware changes.
