No Media Player audio...Error 40258 after Windows update

I updated from Windows98 to 98se and now I get no audio from mpegs/avis...I get an error saying no hardware could be found(Error 40258). Everything was working fine before update...everything else still works now, mp3s, computer sounds, cd player, etc. I've checked under System icon for bad hardware...nothing, tried reinstalling Media Player (same version and a newer version), nothing, visited Microsoft site, of course, nothing. I'm thinking corrupt or missing file??
