Hi all

I have a laptop running Win98 that I use to log into my university domain. The other day my login prompt misteriously disappeared! It takes me straight to the desktop and ofcourse non of the net services work since I'm not logged into the domain. Then I click on log off, the computer logs me out from somewhere I get the prompt and then log back into domain. This is very anoying.

I checked all my settings everything is configured correctly IP, DNS, WINS but still no login prompt on boot up :( Any ideas.. all help appreciated.

Thanks

DM

On the Network Properties main page what is the Primary Network Logon, Is it Windows or Microsoft logon? If so set it to Client for Microsoft Networks for primary network logon. Does that help? James Collins

Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

If butchrecon's suggestion doesn't work, try the following:

- double-click "Client For Microsoft Networks" in the network properties
- make sure "Logon and Restore Network Connections" is selected and not Quick Logon.
- like butchrecon said, make sure primary network logon is "Client For MS Networks"
- it also wouldn't hurt doing a search on your hard drive for all *.pwl files and deleting them.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions exists:
· The Primary Network Logon setting is not set correctly.
· The following entry appears in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net

AutoLogon=xx
NOTE: The AutoLogon value must be a BINARY value and must be set to 00 for automatic logon to work.
· You are logging on to a Novell NetWare network and the server you log on to is running multiple frame types.
· You are logging on to a Microsoft or NetWare network and you have cached your network password.
· The network adapter is improperly configured.

Actually the binary value for autologon should be 00 00 00 00.

If you're still having problems,
Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon
Right-click on the Login key, choose new>BinaryValue, name it MustBeValidated and
give it a value of 01 00 00 00.
