hey all, I have a Cisco 2811 with a HWIC-1GE-SFP card which basically just provides an empty SFP slot. in the sfp slot I have a 1000BASE-T SFP or in other words a gigabit ethernet sfp module. In this setup, I know I won't be getting full gig speed due to limitations on the router's guts, but that's not my issue in this case.

out of that sfp, I am connected to fa0/0 on a 1700 series router owned by my telco which they are using to bond multiple MPLS T1s.

My problem is this: I am getting no link on the ethernet connection between the routers. I've never used this card and sfp module in this way before. Also, I noticed that I don't have any speed/duplex options when configuring the interface, only the "negotiation auto" command. but the rest of my commands worked just fine. here is the running config for that port:

2811-01#sh run int gig 0/2/0
Building configuration...

Current configuration : 189 bytes
!
interface GigabitEthernet0/2/0
description **** Connection to Telepacific MPLS ****
bandwidth 3000
ip address 10.129.2.17 255.255.255.252
ip directed-broadcast
negotiation auto
end

any ideas would be appreciated. I have a cisco case open, so if they ever get back to me with an answer that works I will post an update.

Try inserting (media-type rj45) on the gig port then try to set the speed..

yep, I have a cable plugged in and still no joy. frankly, I'm fine with the auto negotiate, as long as it works...but at this point its still in an up/down status. no link for whatever reason...

if this is going to mpls, dont you need bgp routes? what is your default gateway or routes on the router? i would change the speed and duplex to 100 full. that may also get it working.

holy crap, did you even read the post?

first, they are bonded T1s that are coming into a router owned by the telco, that has nothing to do with the question. The issue is the ethernet link from their 1700 series router to my 2811.

AND, the speed and duplex commands aren't available on my router. its an gigethernet sfp module in my router, not one of the built-in interfaces...its the first time I've used them so I'm not sure why no link and why no speed/duplex commands are available.

sorry i misread your post...good luck with your TAC case...was trying to help.

Easy now, he probably just replied to a wrong post!!!

This could be as simple as to insert a cross over cable. I say that becuase I just installed several 10 meg metro ethernets with different programming and I needed to install a few x-over cables to get link!!!

What other "negotiation" options are there? Also, I believe Jeter nailed it with a crossover---have you tried that?

Burt

yeah, I tried a cross-over at the suggestion of my contact at the telco, still no joy.

my concern is that I'm unfamiliar with this particular WIC in combo with the GigE sfp module. I have no doubts I've missed something in the config, but no idea what it might be.

I've checked compatibility of the wic/sfp with my model of router and everything seems correct.

1) Is the f0/0 on the 1700 shutdown??
2) Did you make the X-Over cable yourself??

oh, and public apology to North323...my response was inappropriate

I don't have access to the 1700 series, its owned by the telco, but I've talked to their support folks several times and they all say its in up/down status, same as mine...

the crossover cable was purchased, I make sloppy cables!

i'm not running mpls on my router, its running on the telco's router.

I see that your still having problems.. What happens when you plug a laptop into the ethernets of the routers?

An SFP module is 1000mb it is not 10/100/1000mb thus there are no speed settings. Additionally a gig interface is full duplex which also explains not having duplex settings.

ahh, brianinms...great call on the speed/duplex settings! the telco is using a 1700 series which doesn't have a gig port, only 10/100. nice! and thanks for explaining it...Cisco TAC basically told me the settings aren't there but didn't tell me why...

That's really wierd. I was going to suggest the same for the speed/duplex issue. I knew for sure that fiber sfp's this is the case, but for the copper I wasn't so sure. I came across this:
You cannot configure speed on SFP module ports, but you can configure speed to not negotiate (nonegotiate) if connected to a device that does not support autonegotiation. However, when a 1000BASE-T SFP module is in the SFP module port, you can configure speed as 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps, or auto.

You cannot configure duplex mode on SFP module ports unless a 1000BASE-T SFP module or a 100BASE-FX MMF SFP module is in the port. All other SFP modules operate only in full-duplex mode.

When a 1000BASE-T SFP module is in the SFP module port, you can configure duplex mode to auto or full.

When a 100BASE-FX SFP module is in the SFP module port, you can configure duplex mode to half or full.
Interesting...

unclerico, that's interesting stuff...is that from the cisco site? I am not finding that to be true. I'm indeed using a 1000Base-T SFP but still no speed or duplex settings. I do see the the "negotation auto" command, but still won't do me any good if I can't dial the thing down to 100Mbps to match the other side!
