I need to install Oracle 10.2.0.2 on my Solaris 10 SUN SPARC system, however, there seems to be no 10.2.0.2 version for the SPARC platform(!).

Is this possible? Is there anyway to get 10.2.0.2 on Solaris Sun SPARC system?

Thank you for your assistance!

JazzGeek,

If you wish to have an Oracle 10.2.0.2 database installation, you must first install Oracle 10.2.0.1 (which I always install from the factory DVD that I order via Metalink), then patch that installation up to 10.2.0.2.

To identify the patch number for Oracle 10.2.0.2 (for Solaris [SPARC 64-bit]):
Code:
1) navigate and log-in to metalink.oracle.com.
2) click [Patches & Updates] tab
3) click the "Quick Links to the Latest Patchsets, Mini Packs, and Maintenance Packs" link
4) [b]Hover over[/b] (do not click) the "Oracle Database" link..."arrow-scroll" down to "Solaris Operating System (SPARC 64-bit)" (or whatever version you want)
5) In the version pop-up window, click "10.2.0.2"
6) Note the patch number (e.g. "4547817, 10.2.0.2 PATCH SET FOR ORACLE DATABASE SERVER").

Rather than downloading patches by clicking on that Metalink screen, I choose, instead, to download patches from Oracle's ftp site. So, to download the above patch:
Code:
1) From your o/s command prompt, issue this command:
"ftp updates.oracle.com"
2) Connect to that site using your Metalink username/password.
3) "cd 4547817" (i.e., the patch number)
4) at the ftp prompt, type "bin" (to set xfer mode to binary)
5) "ls" (to list patch-file names in that directory)
6) "get <patch-file name>"
Let us know if this provides you with the information you need to result in a 10.2.0.2 installation.

Awesome. Thank you!

If you have information on how to install this patch, I would be most grateful.

Thanks again!

Have you ever before installed Oracle on a Solaris platform? If not, is there anyone amongst your in-house colleagues that have done so?

If "no" to all of the above, note that if you wish to install any Oracle software onto a *nix platform, using a PC to run the Oracle installer, you must use an xterm simulator such as Hummingbird's xterm emulator.

Otherwise, you need an xterm GUI installation on the Solaris machine to conduct the Oracle installation.

Let's have you respond to the above issues before I dump more information on you. [smile]

Hi Mufasa

I've installed Oracle about 100 times on various LInux/Unix platforms.

However, I've never installed a Patchset before.

Is this 10.2.0.2 patchset install different than a standard installation? Is there a step-by-step document on how to install this patchset?

Thanks for yosu help!

Frankly, Sebastian, patch installs work just like initial installs: run setup.exe and answer the questions appropriately. Be sure to use the same $ORACLE_HOME that you used for the original install.

Once the patch install completes, re-run the Oracle data dictionary scripts, as well (catalog.sql, et cetera).

But, yes, follow any readme file(s) that come with the patch set.

Thanks. That's a big help!

Take care

The readme file for the patchset will give explicit installation instructions. You don't have to run catalog.sql, contrary to SantaMufasa's advice. Follow the readme instructions to the letter. As you can see from the readme, the proper postinstallation script is catupgrd.sql.

Also, I am curious as to why you specifically need the 10.2.0.2.0 patchset. The 10.2.0.3.0 patchset (patch #5337014) has been available since February. All things being equal, I would say that deploying the latest patchset is the way to go. But of course there are sometimes software compatibility reasons to use an earlier version.

You should also apply the April, 2007 critical patch update, but that is another topic.

Awesome. Thanks for clarifying. Appreciate it.

Hi again,

Since you were so helpful before, I have one last question.

Any idea how I can now install the oracle client for this version on another Solaris 10 SPARC machine?

I was told by someone that I can install the Oracle client from the Oracle Database installation CD, but I cannot find directions on how to do this. Any idea?

Also, will I have to follow the same upgrade path, (install client 10.2.0.1 first, and then the oracle client patchset 10.2.0.2?)

Thank you again!!

Sebastian, since you opened up a new, different thread, I responded there. I recommend that any responses to this particular wrinkle occur in that thread.
