on my compaq, when i boot up it says one of the disk drives
have devolped a bad sector. after scan disk i get an error
that has on top MSGSRV32 has performed an illegal operation
it gives me an option to close or details. after that is closed it says something about the virus program then i have a blank screen and none of my icons show up and i can't access my start menu. i can get online with my instant interent key. how can i access my c drive to get rid of the corrupted files? please help?

What operating system do you have? If it's a Win95 or 98 you can easily bring up the start menu with the F8 key at boot time (just hammer right after the RAM upcount, the menu will eventually show up) and select "Command line only" there - you'll have to unCAB the file(s) from the Win CD. I never used (and most probably never will use) ME, so don't know there. The emergency disk could help a lot if this version still has one (could also help in W95-98). If it's an NT or W2k you'll have to boot with the product CD and select "Repair existing installation" there.

Good luck!
