Hallo,

On an old RH6.something box, I am trying to ftp to another machine. I keep getting this however:

200 PORT command successful.
550 Requested action not taken

Any ideas?

Looks like a filepermission problem. Does it just log you off again??

Hmm no...

[root@ml veritas]# ftp 10.2.0.6
Connected to 10.2.0.6.
220 TheBox FTP server (TheBox 2.1.2) ready.
Name (10.2.0.6:root): admin
331 Password required for admin.
Password:
230 User admin logged in.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> bin
200 Type set to I.
ftp> put be_agnt_234039.tar
local: be_agnt_234039.tar remote: be_agnt_234039.tar
200 PORT command successful.
550 Requested action not taken
ftp>

just sits there.

file pernission:
-rwxrwxr-x

I am lost....

Any firewall between you and the server??

Try ftp localhost on server itself...

Don't think so.
/etc/rc.d/init.d/ipchains stop

[root@ml /root]# ipchains --list
Chain input (policy ACCEPT):
Chain forward (policy ACCEPT):
Chain output (policy ACCEPT):

Still the same. Any other ideas?

What are the permissions of the "admin" home directory, and what is "admin"s logon shell (look at /etc/passwd). I agree with morsing - it still looks like a permission issue...

Now I am getting a bit confused. Admin is an account on the other box (SCO if that matters).

admin:x:105:1:admin:/home/admin:/usr/bin/sh

drwxr-xr-x 3 admin

I can successfully ftp to and from the SCO box with other machines, just not this one.

Are you sure you can read til file you're trying to put??

I think so... How can I be sure?
I can cat it, more it, cp, rm, mv it to my hearts desire. Its a tar file, I can tar xvf it. I just cannot ftp the bloody bugger...

What about trying another ftp program (just to prove a point) such as ncftpput - I believe this is on the full install of Redhat 6.x. It could be an ftp client issue??

Hmmm, ncftp comes up with:

ncftp /home/admin > put be_agnt_234039.tar
put be_agnt_234039.tar: server said: Requested action not taken
ncftp /home/admin >

and then just sits there...

I am puzzled. Its probably something extremely simple, but this has got me stumped.

Anything in the SCO log??
What if you change directory before put'ing??

Nah - I am quite sure its not on the SCO box, after all, I can ftp to that one from Solaris, Win2K and other linux boxes. Its just from this one I am having trouble. Perhaps there is something in xinetd - no inetd I guess, I don't know. I will dig around...

I am logging into this over ssh if that has anyting to do with it? Just a thought...

put be_agnt_234039.tar: server said: Requested action not taken

I'm pretty sure it is.

I'm not saying it's SCO's fault, just that it's reacting to something and that might be in a log.

Henrik,
I don't want to start a long silly discussion here, but it that case why would this be the only box from where I can't ftp? It seems to me that as I can ftp to the SCO box from all but this red hat, that would indicate that the root cause lies on the red hat.
But then again, who am I - just a novice. I will see if I can dig around the log files and let you know.

:)

Ok, back to the basics:

Can you do 'get', 'ls' and other things??
Try put'ing something that's not tar'ed. Works??
Can you 'get' the file from the Linux to the SCO??

Thats the weird part - yes I can ls, yes I can get - but I can't put a darn thing :-( - doesn't seem to matter what I try, always the same - 550 Requested action not taken.

What if it's not a tar file??

Doesn't seem to matter - any file I try to 'put' I get the same error. Its as if there is a setting somewhere not allowing outgoing ftp... but not in the firewall. Is there somewhere you configure the ftp daemon?
