hi all,

At the risk of providing some of you with a good laugh, I'll post this tip.

I moved into a new house 2 months ago and had Bellsouth FastAccess DSL setup. My download speed has been terrible - about 220 mbps all that time.

Yesterday I realized I had attached 1 of the filters to the line going to the modem - as well as on all the voice lines.

Removed the filter from the line attached to modem and the speed is fine now - 1100 mbps. Not lightening speed but what I expected based on other places I've had ADSL.

Maybe this will save someone a service call.

John

I would say you had a bad filter , should make no difference in speed , thats what the filter is for so you can split out the dsl and phone , if you don't have a phone on that line then you don't need it but is shouldn't make any difference.

would the filter not if workign correctly... filter the high frequency that the modem uses?

i would think that with the filter inline going to the modem that you wouldn't even have sync...

I did frequently lose my connection (when I had the filter on the modem line) and surfing was very slow.

All I can say is removing the filter solved all my problems.

John

Right you are plshlpme! If you have a filter on the modem line you most of the time you wouldn't get sync. The best you could hope for is intermittant sync. The whole point of a filter is to "filter" out the digital signal from phones, faxes, etc. If you ever hear a dsl modem over an unfiltered phone you'll know why. Not pleasent!
JohnBates you basically want to put a filter on everything plugged into a phone jack EXCEPT the modem, as you've learned. If you want a little more speed (sounds like you're provisioned for 1500kbps) try using the shortest line possible from the jack to the modem. You also might not be getting full speed due to a fire wall. Also, make sure the maxMTU in your modem is set to 1492.
