i cannot get DHCP or DNS in a w2k update install...

Similar system works fine (different NIC and server vs AdvSrv) ... can swap cables and no change. There is a D-Link router connected to cable modem.

Copied identical tcp/ip properties pages in the local area connection section but no joy. Including paring down the systems to the same set of protocols: just tcp/ip, printer and file sharing.

Bad system has a 3com 3c90b-tx nic and the newest driver from 3com. It is an upgrade from NT4Srv. The problem originated in NT4 (dunno why, i did some virus cleaning with pest patrol and suddenly no DNS on next reboot.) Upgrade to w2kAS cleaned up nothing.

If i hardcode an ip it can ping the router and the other w2k box ... but no dns or even telnet to the router.

Thanks for your attention...

There are times (stretching on two decades now;-) when i really hate GUI's. One of them is like now, when i would like to show what my configuration settings are! (is there any way to get a simple text printout of the maze of dialogs that is w2k's method of making it `ez' to configure your lan connection??)

Well anyway this is what IPCONFIG reports:

Thats it, any other clues i can report?

Maybe that my Yamaha 4416 scsi is nowhere to be found? BIOS sees it fine, NT4 used to see it fine, W2KAS mentions it _no where at all_ that i can find: just lets me know there is indeed an adaptec 2940U/UW card sitting in there apparently w/o purpose. SCSI bios says the drive is lun 3.

Surely this digresses, though tres sorely.

Or perhaps another clue is that it takes a huge time (~5 min) to reboot?

i think i've heard that almost all slow boots are due to network snafusies?

Again the joys of GUI only OS's ... all i can report is that it takes the longest portion of that reboot time occurs when paused over the two o's in Microsoft. With the second taking far the longer. Perhaps those eyes are red because it dearly wants to phone home? Snif!

Speaking of phoning home, i can't seem to get my forum posts mailed to me despite checking the

box... Somewhere else i need to check/set?

I had the same problem when I installed W2k pro on a system when the NIC card was not identified during the install of W2k. This was a red herring.

The message from IPCONFIG /Release was:
Windows 2000 IP Configuration All adapters bound to DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and can not be rebound

I have a home network with a DSL model attached to a Linksys router and a hub. All my other PC attached ok.

I resolved the problem by login to the linksys router. I had limited the DHCP connection to 6 and this was the 7th. I expanded the limit to 7 and the W2k station connected immediately without any further action on my part.

I expect if I release another DHCP address I would have the same results. I suggest that you look at you DHCP configuration to resolve your problem.

I have a similar issue. after uninstalling an application I lost DHCP and dns. I alos hardcoded the IP on the NIC and was able to ping the gateway router. I can't resolve DNS hence no internet or mail.

Did the winsock fix solve your issue?

DHCP is failing for this workstation, and it can be hard to solve.

1. Please reboot after using the WinsockFix tool recommended in this FAQ: FAQ779-4625

2. If ever Norton Anitivirus was installed and removed, please see these notes:
3. Look at the Network Connections, Properties, for the adapter involved. Highlight TCP/IP Properties, Advanced button, and check under DNS and WINS tab for any static assignment for a DNS server, WINS server or LMHOSTS server. If so, uncheck to the box or remote the entries for static DNS servers, WINS or LMHOSTS.

4. Check under c:\windows (or winnt)\system32\drivers\etc\ and the HOSTS file. You can edit the file under notepad. The only entry you want is, after the comments:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Though I gave you a Star I wanted to personnally thank bcastner for his recommendation of the WinSockFix tool.

Been scratching my head for weeks and now everything is running smoothly.

Brandon

You are very welcome, Brandon and all.

You might find faq779-4625 usefull as a discussion of the causes of Winsock2 corruption. Please also see the MS KB article links in the FAQ as well.

Best,
Bill Castner

was unable to read FAQ779-4625. I encountered the problem
"All adapters bound to DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and can not be rebound" when apparently port #2 on my linksys switch failed.

I had swapped out NICs, cables, pinged localhost, all seemed OK, but once I switched out from this port, the above problem cleared up immediately.

Hope this helps.
