I'm having an issue after moving my computer from one location to another. It worked fine before I moved it, however after being moved here are the issues I am experiencing.

System Specs:
Gigabyte 8S648FX-L
P4 2.4 Ghz 800Mhx FSB
1GB DDR 400Mhz RAM
30GB Western Digital(Master - IDE Contoller 1)
120GB Western Digital(Slave - IDE COntroller 1)
Lite-On DVD Drive(Master - IDE Controller 2)
Lite-On CDRW Drive(Slave - IDE Controller 2)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
SB Live!
Netgear FA310TX
Realtek 8139(On-board LAN)
TCP/IP (Main protocol used)
Windows XP Pro

The system is not reporting any DHCP or DNS server and not listing any Gateway. After messing around with it for about an hour or so, I decided to reload the system from scratch (it needed it anyways). After doing a fresh load of Windows XP(using the Netgear card), it was still having the same problem as before. When viewing the status of the Local Area Connection, the following information is provided:

Address Type: Automatic Private Address
IP Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Subnet Mask: xxx.xxx.0.0
Default Gateway: (Blank)

Clicking on the details option gives the following information:

DNS Server: (Blank)
WINS Server: (Blank)

I decided to try another fresh reload, this time using the on-board Realtek LAN. I removed the Netgear card from the system and reloaded but still recieved the same results. I ran the ipconfig /release command with no problems, however when I ran the ipconfig /renew command it provided a message stating that the system is unable to contact the DCHP server. I checked under services to verify the the DHCP client was loading at startup and that it was enabled. After verifying that it was I decided to try installing the WinSock fix, but still the problem exists. If anyone of you can help me resolve this issue, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

It sounds like you have things working on the XP box. The problem could be that on the new location a DHCP server cannot be reached (IP relay not configured on the router for the new location) or the DHCP server was not configured to hand out addresses on the new location segment.

When you get "Automatic Private Address", which is normally a 169.something address, means that when your machine booted using DHCP it could not find a DHCP server so XP gives you an address it makes up. You can't go anywhere with the address.

To test to see that the XP machine is working you could configure it with a static address, but you will need to know what addresses are used on the segment you are on. You will also need to know the gateway, netmask, and a DNS server address. Once you have that configured and you should be able to get out on the network. You'll know that the problem is not the XP machine.

I'm having the same prob with an XP home box. I have tried using the WINSOCKFIX util but up until now it hangs at "releasing IP"
Any other thoughts
Thanks

If the computer is set to 'obtain an IP address automaticly' then there must be a DHCP server. (eventually it will time out an assign an automatic address).

There is no description here of the modem, router or other source of DHCP services. Check the connections. If there has been no software changes, it is not finding your modem, router or other DHCP device.

Thanks for your input. In frustration I closed the DOS box and lo and behold the fix finished and I was conected again.
