No design option on tables/diagrams in data view window

I have set up a datalink to a SQL server database(s), but when I right click on a table I can open it to view the data, but there's no design option. Why can't I see it.

This may be a silly question, but do you have permission to create tables on the database?

You might also need to be sa, or aliased to sa, but I'm not sure about that.

There's no problem creating tables on the database. Everything else seems hunky dory...I can update data when I open the table through the data link, but there is no 'Design' option on the menu when I right click on the table. Similarly with the diagrams, and I can't open the query designer
